Kathleen Peters
I’m just a regular mom who happens to homeschool my two sons. I like to knit when I get the hankerin’ and I can be a complete goofball. But mostly, I would say my favorite hobby is learning new things. I know, strange, huh? I was one of those kids who liked school. Currently, I’m intrigued with learning how to be more self-reliant (gardening, milking goats, raising meat chickens, etc). You’ll also find me learning about parenting, marriage, cooking and health. So, blogging seemed like the natural thing to do. Blog about what I learn.
We’ve been homeschooling since our oldest was born. I know, it sounds silly, but really that’s when it all began. So, we’ve been at it for awhile. The boys are currently 14 and 10. We’ve done everything from Classical Education, to Sonlight, to our current, live and learn approach.
The latest approach to learning came in October 2007 (Music Man:10 yrs and Soccer Boy: 7 yrs). God seemed to be asking us to homeschool differently. We’ve settled, most days, on this live and learn approach, where you focus in on the child’s interests and strengths and allow him to lead the way in his learning. I am very definitely a check list sort of gal, so this has been a tough adjustment in many ways. I don’t mind being spontaneous about where we should go out to dinner, but my childrens’ education? I’ve read just about every book I can get my hands on about unschooling, but none of them seem to adequately explain to this brain what it looks like day to day. So, blogging seemed like a great way to sort it all out and show myself that indeed learning is taking place.
In December 2009, we moved to our dream farm. We’re all city kids, so we’re learning the farm stuff as we go. I, for one, am having a blast with becoming a bit more self-reliant. The kids…not so much.
Ah, they’ll thank me later. I’ve been married to my sweet husband for almost 18 years and I think we’re having more fun than we ever have.
Lately, blogging has meant some discussion about food. I’m a bit obsessed these days since I discovered I have invasive yeast (Candida). About 3 times the normal amount. So, my naturopath put me on this super restrictive diet. No bread, grains, dairy, fruit, sugar, mushrooms, potatoes, or corn. (I’ve since graduated to 1.5 Cups whole grains and 1.5 Cups fruit a day) What else is there, you may ask? Meat, vegetables and a few nuts. So, pardon me while I get used to eating this way. I’m sure I’ll get back to writing about more normal stuff. You know, like helping a momma goat give birth. Normal like that.
I hope you’ll stop by every so often and throw in your two cents. I love, love, love learning from other women. And I adore getting comments. It totally makes my day. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s my ‘Words of Encouragement’ Love Language. And if you want to know when I add something new to the blog, just click on the ‘Subscribe’ button. It’s to the right, just below ‘Recent Articles’. It won’t cost you a thing, and you’ll be getting email from someone who thinks you’re great. No really. I do.

Hi Kiddo. I love your blog and I was especially glad to hear you want to learn how to apply eye shadow. I didn’t fail as a mother afterall….just kidding. When you’re ready for a trip to Nordies I’m your girl.
By the way I love your brain and take partial credit for it; afterall, I birthed you.
Hugs,
Mom
And credit, you should take, Mom. You deserve every bit. Thanks for birthing me and always using big literary words. I have you to blame for all the fancy descriptive words that pop into my brain here and there. I’m not even sure I could explain what half of them mean.:-) I have to keep asking Ron if I use them correctly.
I love you.
Give Don and Nancy a hug for me.
Kathleen, I love you! Not everyone can write in a way that really befits their personality, but you, my friend have the knack! Thank you for sharing your heart and your escapades. I love being along for the ride.
I want to know if you are the same Kathleen Peters that brought kids to AWANA at Grace where my husband and I taught Cubbies. If so, I would love to talk to you more as I have been doing much reading lately about whole foods, trying to implement dietary changes, and dreaming about a farm. Please send e-mail.
Emily,
But seriously, would love to chat whole foods and farms. Some of my favorite topics. I’m emailing you my email.
I am the one you are seeking.
Kathleen – you are one of the COOLEST CATS I have ever known! I love the way you think, I love the way you write, the love the way you are you!
I would LOVE to be a perpetual student… I totally LOVE learning new things so reading your blog is fantastic! Yeah you!
